The river moves so fast that it swept obvious toxins downstream quickly. While the Animas disaster avoided immediate and catastrophic results, the ultimate ecological price tag will take longer to figure. The former actually triggered the incident and the latter have a tourist season to save. It is no accident that federal and Colorado officials have tried to put the best face on disaster. Politicians are pointing fingers at each other.
